COMPOSITION FOR GAMES & MEDIA
HARMONY & MUSICAL LANGUAGE:
Develop a broader harmonic vocabulary through modal writing, tonal ambiguity, chord color, harmonic movement, tension and resolution. Study how harmony can establish atmosphere, reinforce narrative context, and create distinctive musical identities for different worlds, characters, and situations. Concepts are explored through practical examples drawn from both game and film scores, connecting harmonic theory directly to real-world scoring practice.

FROM THE LAB MATERIALS:

THEMATIC WRITING & DEVELOPMENT:
Explore how themes and motifs are constructed, varied and transformed across a score. Study techniques such as variation, fragmentation, reharmonization, orchestral transformation and motivic development, and examine how thematic material can maintain a recognizable identity while adapting to different characters, locations, emotional states or gameplay situations.
MUSIC & NARRATIVE:
Analyze how harmony, melody, rhythm, register, texture and orchestration interact with image, narrative and gameplay. Study how musical choices can influence the perception of character, atmosphere, tension, scale, movement and dramatic perspective, and how the same musical material can take on different meanings depending on its audiovisual context.
ANALYSIS INTO COMPOSITION:
Theory is approached as a practical compositional tool rather than as an isolated academic subject. Through score analysis, listening, and practical exercises, you will identify specific techniques used in professional film and game music, understand the musical principles behind them, and explore how those principles can be transformed and applied to your own writing.
