ARTICULATIONS & MIDI PROGRAMMING:
Develop a detailed approach to articulation programming and learn how to select, combine, and transition between articulations according to musical context. Explore keyswitches, articulation maps, MIDI controllers, and performance parameters to reproduce the phrasing and instrumental behavior of live orchestral players.
DYNAMICS, EXPRESSION & PHRASING:
Examine how velocity, MIDI Continuous Controllers, dynamic layers, and automation interact to shape expressive performances. Learn to construct convincing crescendos, diminuendos, phrase contours, and dynamic transitions while preserving the natural relationship between intensity, timbre, and musical direction.
REALISM & HUMANISATION:
Explore the parameters that distinguish a programmed sequence from a convincing musical performance. Refine timing, note length, attack, release, transitions, and subtle performance variations while considering how individual players and orchestral sections naturally interact within an ensemble. The objective is not to introduce randomness, but to reproduce the controlled variation and musical responsiveness characteristic of live performance.
BALANCE & ORCHESTRAL MIXING:
Develop an understanding of balance from both an orchestral and production perspective. Explore section hierarchy, dynamic relationships, depth, stereo placement, spatial organization, and the interaction between orchestration and mixing decisions within a virtual orchestral environment. Learn to use production techniques to support the orchestration rather than compensate for weaknesses in the musical arrangement.
FROM SCORE TO MOCK-UP:
Learn how to translate written orchestral material into an effective virtual performance while preserving the musical intention of the score. Examine the relationship between notation and playback, identifying which elements of a written score require additional interpretation when transferred to a DAW. Explore how musical gestures, articulations, dynamics, and instrumental roles can be adapted to the capabilities and limitations of contemporary sample libraries without compromising the original orchestral concept.
PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTION WORKFLOW:
Build an efficient and scalable workflow for professional orchestral production. Organise templates, routing, track structures, articulation systems, MIDI controllers, automation, microphone configurations, and session management to support both creative flexibility and technical reliability. Develop a workflow capable of taking a project from the initial MIDI sequence to a refined, production-ready orchestral mock-up.

Selected DAW sessions, MIDI programming examples, and production materials from The Media Composer Lab. Rather than focusing exclusively on theoretical material, this area provides direct insight into the practical construction of professional orchestral mock-ups.
